iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 shell

Photos of the alleged iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 have been leaked online. See also: Apple event live: iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch.

Apple isn't expected to unveil the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 for another month or two but that hasn't stopped them leaking online. Two photos showing the aluminium rear casing has been posted on Chinese social networking site Weibo via NowhereElse.

The snaps give a glimpse at what the new generation iPads will look like. The iPad 5 will be thinner due to screen technology used in the iPad mini - a touch sensor that is built into the front panel. It will also be narrower than the iPad 4 thanks to a more slender bezel and overall be closer to the size of the iPad mini.

It seems that Apple has gone for a slightly squarer but still rounded shell for the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 which are complete with iPhone-esque holes for a Lightning connector and down-facing speakers.

The iPad mini 2 will offer the same 7.9 in screen but with a Retina class resolution this time round. Both the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 will come with iOS 7 when they launch.

It's widely said that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in September with the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 following in October. All will be released in time for the Christmas season.
