SMARegisTry Backup is a simple tool for backing up and restoring only selected Registry keys. There are plenty of competing tools around to back up the entire Registry, but that's no use if you only want to save and restore one or two HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software keys, say - which is where SMARegisTry Backup may come in useful.
The program has a fairly basic interface, no great surprise as it's only 92KB in size. Once launched, you can browse your Registry for keys you'd like to protect, and add them to a central list. All your chosen keys can then be backed up at a click. Your list of keys may be backed up for easy re-use later, and you can also restore your keys from the program, too (although they're backed up as a standard .REG file so simply double-clicking it will probably be enough to restore them).
You could of course do something very similar with the Windows Registry Editor alone: just browse to the keys you need, export them, and restore them later if and when necessary.
SMARegisTry Backup's ability to save a list of keys is an improvement, though. And if you regularly need to back up and restore a large set of Registry keys then the program should save you a little time.
?Enhanced code for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
?Less permissions are now needed to run SMARegisTry Backup since keys are only opened as read only.
?SMARegisTry Backup no longer crashes when it is unable to open a registry key based on access permissions.
?Fixed command line argument logging and enhanced the way arguments work.
?Fixed a critical bug dealing with quotes in directory paths.
?Added new command line arguments to automatically backup a list of registry keys or import all keys from a directory.
The interface needs work, but SMARegisTry Backup's ability to selectively back up and restore a list of Registry keys could be occasionally useful
