The Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D costs around £1,100 and is a phenomenal laptop. It features a 15-inch display but somehow only weighs 1.58 kg, all in a good-looking magnesium chassis. You get a large battery that lasts a long time and you can expand the amount of RAM if you want. Windows 8 works great on it, thanks to the large touchpad that functions the same way a touchscreen does.

One of the best Ultrabooks currently available is without a doubt the Samsung Series 9 NP900X3C, a model that now has bigger sibling in the form of the Series 9 NP900X4D. The new series 9 has a larger screen of 15 inches, but has kept all of the advantages of the smaller model, including the sleek design and low weight.

When you hold the 15-inch Series 9 in your hands for the first time you will be surprised how little it weighs. That Samsung was able to keep it under 1.6 kg is impressive, considering that manufacturers struggle to reach that weight with smaller laptops. Add to that the attractive and sleek design of the smaller laptop, and you have a winner.

It's not just similarities, however. The smaller model is constructed out of aluminium, and Samsung switched to magnesium for the chassis of the new 15-inch model. It's cheaper to produce, but it looks great and feels nice too. Only the edge around the screen is in a different material.

When you look at the sides the design is also very stylish, with sloping edges accentuating the sleek design even more. Even the design of the bottom of the laptop received some attention in terms of looks, and has the Windows 8 logo as distinguishing touch. That's right, the Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D has Windows 8 (not Pro).

The Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D is the first laptop Hardware.Info has tested with Microsoft's new operating system. It's the standard version, not the Pro one. Windows 8 won’t receive a review here, but it stands out how pleasant the user experience is on this laptop. The Series 9 laptop does not feature a touchscreen, so this is primarily due to the smart touchpad. The large touchpad basically works the same as how you would interact with Windows 8 on a touchscreen. If you move your finger along the right side of the touchpad, the charms will appear on-screen, and other gestures also feel familiar to the Windows 8 touchscreens.

Samsung also added software, and the ones on the Windows 8 start screen really stand out. These include a cooking app with 10 Jamie Oliver recipes, Kindle from Amazon and Evernote. Samsung's own apps include the video player S Player, photo album S Gallery, webcam photo editing program S Camera and its WhatsApp alternative ChatOn. A number of desktop applications have been added as  well, including a 60-day license for Norton Internet Security.

The hardware inside the Samsung Series 9 NP900X4D is similar to that of the smaller 13.3-inch Series 9. The designers could have taken the easy road and used the same motherboard, which you could suspect when looking at the specs. The NP900X4D has 4 GB DDR3-1600 TSM and an Intel Core i5 3317U. When you open up the laptop you see that the motherboard is indeed different.
